• Tools - some spanners (10mm and 13mm are the most commonly used) for undoing the terminal bolts, a socket set with an extension bar and range of socket sizes (10mm and 13mm are the most common) for releasing the bottom bracket that fixes to the hold down lip of the battery (if applicable).
• Disconnecting - release the negative terminal first and the positive terminal last.
• Remove the battery hold down bracket.
• Remove the old battery. Before fitting the new battery clean the battery tray and ensure there are no stray objects that could puncture the battery casing.
• Reconnecting - Apply some battery terminal grease to the new battery posts (just a light smear will do). Ensure battery leads are in good condition and the terminals are clean (use wire wool, or scrape with a knife if necessary until you have nice, bright metal). Attach the positive terminal first and tighten until it holds firm (do not over tighten) and repeat the procedure with the negative terminal last.
• Refit the battery hold down bracket.

• Maintenance - keep the battery clean and dry. Check the battery terminals are clean and tight.
• Topping-up - no longer applicable to 90% of modern maintenance-free and sealed car batteries (and is impossible on sealed types), but if topping-up of the electrolyte level is required use de-ionised water to approximately 1/4" above the plates of each cell.
• Battery storage - NEVER LEAVE YOUR CAR BATTERY IN A DISCHARGED STATE! All automotive/lead-acid batteries must be fully charged before storing. Failure to do this will result in a discharged battery becoming sulphated (cannot be recharged), rendering it useless and voiding any warranty. If storing a battery that is fitted to a vehicle disconnect the battery terminals. If storing away from the vehicle leave it in a cool dry place. Do not store on a cold stone floor.
• Use a quality battery charger/maintainer at regular intervals to ensure peak performance of you battery is maintained.

Your battery is guaranteed not to fail due to faulty materials or workmanship for that battery type's specified warranty period.

What the warranty doesn't cover

• Misuse or excessive use
• Fair wear an tear
• Failure due to lack of charge, lack of use or sulphation
• Alternator damage (either undercharging or overcharging)
• Damage caused by external influences (faulty starter motors, short circuits etc.)
• Physical damage to the battery casing.
